BigWig Fun Fact: I learned to read at the age of 28, for the second time in my life. Brain surgery will do that to you!
Why are you participating?
My reason for wanting to be a BigWig- Three and a half years ago I went for my routine, yearly mammogram. I completed a mammogram and an ultrasound evaluation. I was anxiously waiting to get my clean bill of health and leave. However, the ultrasound tech walked out of the room out and the doctor returned. I was a little shocked, but still not concerned. As the doctor continued the ultrasonic exam, I asked her what was taking so long. Specifically, I asked her if she was just doing a thorough exam out of an abundance of caution. She stopped and looked me in my eyes and told me that she was 95% sure that I had breast cancer. I had a biopsy and an MRI that day in the office. I returned three days later for another biopsy. Each test was negative, but she did not trust the results. The doctor said it looked like textbook cancer. I had surgery to remove the mass. Fortunately, the mass was negative. Though my story ended quickly and well, it provided a limited insight into the emotional and physical nightmare that women who are diagnosed with this disease bravely endure.
