Being a Big Wig is important to me because of the women close to me that have boldly battled this disease. I think anyone diagnosed with breast cancer needs to know they are never alone in their fight…from pre-diagnosis, while going through all the tests, to the day their treatments are finished and beyond. Most recently one of my incredible co-workers, Donna, was diagnosed and I promised her from the very beginning that she would have a circle that would support her and encourage her during her fight. Our “circle bond” strengthened so much the night we all gathered for a “Hair Coming Out” party to help cut her hair and then shave her head. To say this was a night I will never forget is an understatement. I truly felt that what could have been a very traumatizing event for Donna became a celebration of our “Circle” each time her hair was snipped. There was so much laughter and love in that room—she knew we would all be there for her no matter what!
Donna’s will, determination and walk with Christ has inspired me to continue to raise awareness for this disease. She battled like a warrior and showed grace throughout her fight. I witnessed her work a full‑time job with JOY and little to no complaining while going through treatment. What was most impactful to me was that she continued to shine her light to others even when her path seemed so dark. She won the fight and inspired so many along the way. The saying we had during her fight was: No One in this Circle Fights Alone #TeamDonna. That was true then and will continue to be true for Donna and for others going through the fight.
