2016 Komen Knoxville Race for the Cure

Tonya's Squad

Welcome to Tonya's Squad!

The Youth Department of New Hope Missionary Baptist is spearheading this team as we "race for the cure" in memory of Tonya Yvette Maddox Lewis.

Tonya was a great person.  She was a strong and beautiful person who gave her all in all she did.  She had a smile that would light up the darkest room, a great sense of humor, an ability to make you laugh, no-nonsense attitude, strength and faith in God.  Her infectious spirit inspired all those she came in contact with.

As Tonya battled breast cancer, she knew that Jesus was her firm foundation, her salvation, her solid rock.  Although she is no longer with us, her words about cancer still resonate within our hearts.  On September 14, 2014 Tonya wrote, "as I sit here in the chemo bay looking around at all of cancer's victims, I think about how dreadful this disease really is.  It takes your appetite, sometimes your strength. It can take your ability to function by yourself.  It robs you of your smile on some days.  But then, I think about Jesus and all that he took on for a lowly sinner such as myself.  I think about Him taking that beating on the cross for me.  The nails in His hands and feet.  The vinegar they gave Him instead of water.... Then my soul rejoices in the fact that once I do leave this world, Heaven is waiting for me! Cancer might be holding me hostage for a little while, but it cannot last for eternity! Thank You God for the Good News! Glory!

Tonya's Squad is giving our all to help find a cure for breast cancer.  As a member of this team, we are each playing a part in helping Susan G. Komen® end breast cancer forever.

Together, we are fueling the best science, boldest community and biggest impact in the fight against breast cancer. And we will not stop until this disease is gone forever. That’s our promise.
